This study examines the impact of modern architecture on the cultural identity of Iranian cities. Modern architecture, characterized by principles such as simplicity, functionality, and the use of new materials, has increasingly permeated major Iranian cities like Tehran and Mashhad, bringing about significant changes in urban spaces, social structures, and city symbols. Using a qualitative and comparative approach, this research analyzes the positive and negative effects of modern architecture on cultural identity. The findings reveal that, while modern architecture has contributed to improved urban functions and infrastructure development, it has also posed challenges to society by diminishing the sense of place and weakening cultural bonds. In many cases, modern architecture has reduced social interactions by replacing traditional open and communal spaces with enclosed and individualized structures. These shifts have led to a reduction in cultural identity and social cohesion in modern Iranian cities. The study suggests that adopting hybrid models that integrate traditional and indigenous elements with modern principles could help design spaces that meet contemporary needs while preserving cultural identity. It recommends that urban policymakers and architects consider the importance of cultural identity in enhancing urban life quality and adopt this hybrid approach in future designs.
